Dr. Lionel Nugaliyadde, BSc (Cey), MSc (UPLB), PhD (Newcastle, UK), is a renowned agricultural scientist with a distinguished career in rice pest management. He began his research on Clithon oualaniensis under Prof. H. Grunerberg (FRS) and later continued studies on parasites of the relict fauna of Ceylon with Prof. Hilary Crusz. Joining the Rice Research Institute in 1977, Dr. Nugaliyadde’s pioneering work on seedling thrips and brown planthopper resistance significantly contributed to developing rice varieties resistant to major pests and biotypes of rice gall midge. He is the recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including the National Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research, IRRI’s Dr. Dharmawansa Senadhira Memorial Award, and the Scientist of the Year Award by the Department of Agriculture. A Fellow and Governing Council Member of the Sri Lanka Institute of Agriculture (SLIAg), Dr. Nugaliyadde continues to be a leading figure in advancing sustainable rice production and integrated pest management in Sri Lanka.
